Message from the Captain of Boarding
My name is Emma Friedlander and I have been at St Edmund’s for a year, joining in the Lower Sixth. I can honestly say I genuinely love every moment of my time here and I am making the very most of every moment. I am currently studying for A levels in Psychology, Spanish, English Literature and the AQA Baccalaureate.
Back in September the 5th at precisely 4.30pm, my first day at St Edmund's, I burst into tears, and then was met with Mr Brewer, Fliss, Mrs Newton and not forgetting little Hattie who brought my smile out. I guess I was just overwhelmed. Though I missed home and my mum like crazy, it was the best decision I ever made, I am ridiculously happy here and however hard the first few weeks were I wouldn’t change a thing and am so thankful for all the supportive teachers who didn’t let me give up.
I will never forget the first few days, I was put in a double room with a lovely girl from Hong Kong and as the year developed, so did our personalities. We have gained a lasting friendship which I am very thankful for. Through my final year at St Edmund’s and as the new Captain of Boarding, I want any new boarders from whatever culture or background to join into our St Edmund’s family, which really is one to treasure.
As a huge plus point, St Edmund’s has the facilities of a large school but the classes are small, which allows you to know everyone, avoid clicks and mix with your whole year. You very quickly feel at home and are relaxed due to the great atmosphere here; it’s almost as if you have two homes! Boarding is pretty flexible, we have many benefits you wouldn’t necessarily have at home, such as trips most Sunday to places like Somerset house, Bluewater or go-karting. How about having a huge family of 80+? Now that is fun! And school facilities such as the pool during summer and tennis courts, basketball courts and endless acres to go for runs in. We also have an ICT lab and a library to do prep in, with teachers on hand in the evening to help. Oh, and not to forget the movie nights and barbecues!
As Captain of Boarding I also have many responsibilities alongside my Vice-Captain and the Senior Boarding Prefect: we act as representatives of the boarding community, making sure everyone is happy and coping well with work and being away from home. One of my main aims is for both boys and girls to know I am here for them no matter what and will do my upmost to help them wherever I can, even if they simply fancy a chat or laugh.
