Current Endeavours

The Foundation has established the following appeals:

The Alps Astroturf Appeal

The School's first major appeal is being devoted to an all-important and much-needed playing surface, with a target of £595,000. This will be an all-weather, multi-purpose, floodlit Astroturf surface, set on the St Edmund's Alps, which will allow hockey to be played at competitive level, as well as for the practice of football, 5-a-side football, cricket and tennis.

Currently, the School is forced to use the Astroturf at either the University of Kent or at the Polo Farm, the inconvenience of which has an adverse impact on players' performance. St Edmund's is an increasingly eminent sporting school and this development is urgently required to match the needs and aspirations of the players. Playing sport on a top quality astroturf will enable St Edmund's pupils, and those at local schools, to develop their sporting talents, to benefit from teamwork and the thrill of healthy competition, and to view physical activity as a healthy lifestyle for the rest of their lives.

School Hall Refurbishment - COMPLETED

By the start of the 2010 academic year, the School successfully raised £75,000 thanks to the kindness and generosity of donors. We would like to extend a huge thank you to all those that kindly contributed to this appeal. It has helped create a 'state of the art' concert hall and theatre. The decision to refurbish and re-equip the School Hall was taken in recognition of the enormous contribution that former Director of Drama, Richard Parsons, made to the School during his 18 years.

Setting up a Legacy Club

As you reflect on your school days, perhaps you feel privileged to have been educated at St Edmund's School - having had an excellent standard of education, a good head-start in life and happy childhood years? If so, now there is an opportunity for you to help other talented children benefit in the same way as you - through leaving a legacy.

By leaving a legacy to St Edmund's, you can play an important part whether it be through giving the opportunity to those who might otherwise not be able to afford an education at St Edmund's or through enhancing the school for future generations. A legacy is one of the greatest gifts you can make, creating a permanent testimony to your affection for St Edmund's and all that it stands for.

The Burnside Legacy Club will provide St Edmund's School with funds for any project as specified by the donor.

Endowments for Scholarships and Bursaries

This 10 year project, with a target of £5 million, will provide funding to support future scholarships and bursaries. It will also aim to provide part-funding of day or boarding fees for Cathedral choristers who continue into the Senior School and, additionally, a greater intake of 21st century Foundationers, clergy orphans, each year.

The fund aims to:

  • be true to the Schools Christian principles and origins.

  • offer assistance with school fees to those who could not otherwise afford to come to St Edmund's and to those already at the school where, for example, the loss of a parent or other unforeseen circumstance intervenes.

  • place particular emphasis on assisting clergy orphans, known as Foundationers.

  • ensure that all financial assistance is needs-based and subject to annual review.

  • provide financial support, as necessary, to ensure that the choristers of Canterbury Cathedral can continue their education at the Senior School.
