Business Studies
At St. Edmund's, Business Studies is offered exclusively in the Sixth Form, and is a dynamic and contemporary subject area; our curriculum is intended to offer our pupils knowledge across a wide range of business areas, and also to enable them to demonstrate those skills in a practical manner. We also see industrial visits to businesses or commercial organisations as a key aspect of the course.
The curriculum focuses on understanding business and what it does, covering a wide range of functions including marketing, finance, operations management and human resources management. It also places business in context, and explores the impact of external factors, such as government policy or lobby groups, on the workings and success of an organisation.
Our syllabus for the Lower Sixth (the AS Level modules) concentrates on business organisation, business objectives and environment, and raises questions such as how a business is started and what its aims should be. We also cover the four business 'behaviours' of marketing, finance, production and human resources in this year. At the A2 Level, in the Upper Sixth, pupils choose to focus on one of these last four subject areas in more depth, as well as covering business strategy in a module which brings together all of their learning from the other A Level modules.
Business Studies is an excellent foundation for careers in both the private and public sectors, and many universities and colleges offer business or management studies degrees. Our pass rate for A Level at St. Edmund's is outstanding.
