Information and Communications Technology
Understanding and being able to use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is not only a valuable skill within the school itself, it is of course also essential for life outside and beyond school, whether at work or for leisure. Our aim at St. Edmund's is therefore to equip our pupils with this knowledge, both through hands-on experience of a wide range of software tools and applications, and also by encouraging pupils to use their ICT skills in the course of their studies for other subjects.
Within their ICT lessons, pupils will learn how to use a broad range of computer applications, including working with word-processing software, how to create spreadsheets and databases, using graphics and desktop publishing packages, and developing web-pages. As well as these specific applications, we also teach our children how to use email and the Internet and each pupil has his or her own St. Edmund's email address. Our pupils start to learn about ICT in the Junior School, and their skills are consolidated throughout their Senior School careers.
In support of our ICT teaching, we have an excellent ICT infrastructure, with a high-speed, fibre optic based network, and over 150 PCs. Two 2MB Broadband internet connections ensure that the learning potential of the Internet is available to all. In light of the fact that more and more pupils have their own laptops for their school work, we also plan to install radio networking connections which will enable them to access the school network from their laptops, anywhere in the world!
