Mathematics
Mathematics is a challenging, but fascinating discipline, one which Galileo once described as the language in which God wrote the universe. It teaches the skills of logical thought, problem solving, and the construction of an argument; and it offers the unparalleled thrill of getting an answer absolutely and perfectly right, something which few other disciplines can claim.
Mathematics is a core subject at St. Edmund's up to GCSE level, and, in fact, we study for the International GSCE (IGSCE) award, which we believe to form a more coherent course of study. Our syllabus covers five main areas: using and applying mathematics; developing knowledge of numbers, including decimals, fractions, percentages, accuracy and rounding; algebra; shape, space and measure; and data handling, introducing pupils to the concepts of the collection, analysis and interpretation of numerical information.
In the Sixth Form, pupils can take two A Levels, in Mathematics and in Further Mathematics. The AS and A2 Level modules for Mathematics offer a mixture of Pure Mathematics and Statistics, with the possibility at A2 level of choosing a module in either Mechanics, Decision and Discrete Mathematics, or more Statistics. The Further Mathematics modules include Advanced Mathematics, Statistics, Mechanics and Decision and Discrete Mathematics.
Those pupils who study A Level Mathematics at St. Edmund's will agree that they have had to work hard for their success, but we are proud to say that success is what our pupils achieve: we have an excellent results record, and our pupils have gone on to a wide range of degree courses, including those at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
