Pastoral Care
The first day at school is a treasured and important step for both parent and child, and Abingdon House makes each child's happiness and sense of security an absolute priority in the early years. At the same time, we recognise that every child has his or her own unique personality and abilities and so from that first day pupil and teacher form a partnership to stimulate new interests and to develop particular strengths.
We aim to provide a stimulating, safe environment where each child will feel happy and secure in a very friendly atmosphere. Each child will be encouraged to take a pride in their own achievements and feel themselves to be a valued member of a wider group. They should develop a respect for the needs of others, for their own and other people's possessions, and for their environment. We place particular emphasis on interpersonal skills, especially courtesy and consideration.
The class teacher plays a vital role in creating this environment. All our teachers are very experienced with young learners and teach them all the core subjects, with help from specialists for music, PE and dance.
We have four year groups in Abingdon House from Nursery to Year 2. Every class has a class teacher and is supported by a full time classroom assistant. This means that the teachers can really get to know your child and provide the encouragement and support they need to develop their individual talents, and their confidence.
Parents are encouraged to become involved in their child's education as the welfare of pupils is of paramount importance to us and we are sensitive to parental concerns. Parents are always welcome in the classrooms and we make sure that there are plenty of opportunities to talk to the staff. In addition, we provide many opportunities for parents to particpate in out-of-classroom activities and to support their children in as many ways as possible.
We also offer after school care from 3.40 pm until 5.00 pm for those children whose parents work and wish to collect them later than the normal end of school time.
