St Edmund’s pianists were treated to a masterclass given by Thomas Ang, holder of the Jacob Barnes Award at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The afternoon session began with Thomas himself performing three Debussy pieces after which pupils were keen to ask questions about performance and preparation techniques. The participants were Mark Lower and Fergus McKie from the Junior School, and Frankie Shepley, William Inscoe, Alex Thorne and Timon Staehler from the Senior School. Constructive criticism was the order of the day and it was delivered with humour and much warmth. At the end of the masterclass, Thomas rounded off the session by performing a technically challenging Sonata movement by Kapustin. All in all, an enjoyable afternoon was had by everyone in this celebration of enviable St Edmund’s pianism.
