Form 3's Manhole Cover Expedition - Maths in Action!

Date: Thursday 24 June 2010

Today in maths the children in Form 3 went on a manhole cover spotting

expedition. Their brief was to collect as many specimens or as many

different "species" as possible. As St Edmund's is blessed with a large

population of manhole covers, the task was an extensive one! Once the

children located their specimen, they had to work in groups to record their

specimen using special expedition paper to create a rubbing.

After they collected their data, the children created a specimen gallery in

Mrs Yearsley's room and discussed some of the mathematical concepts they

noticed: shapes, angles, measuring, symmetry, rotations and reflections

were all noted! There was even an exciting discussion about the angles of a

square as compared to the angles of a diamond shape.
