Old Boys' Veterans' Football
Date: Saturday 17 November 2007
It is always a pleasure for the School to renew acquaintance with its former pupils, and to enjoy some friendly competition on the sports' field. Today we welcomed back a selection of veteran and semi-veteran Old Boys, who played their now regular annual fixture against the School's 2nd Football XI.
The Old Boys fielded both experience and talent: Paul Baker played 'up front' as he has done since the 1970s; Chris Gremo never stopped running in midfield; Kris de Pledge and Henry Mason were solid in front of, and in the back four; and Ky Wilkinson resumed his normal position in goal. Steve Rumbelow produced a moment to savour - a Pele-like overhead kick, somewhere on the left side of midfield!
The School won 6 - 2. Two goals apiece from Mark Thomas and Matt Dixon - he played a brief ten-minute first half cameo - plus second half goals from Mr Bean (Zhi Heng) and Tom Hulme outfired the brace from Paul Baker, who nodded home a Paul Walker corner, and then beat Alasdair McMaster with a 40 yard drive.
Players to watch for the future? Joe Rawlins, solid as a rock in the back four, and excellent in the air, and Tom Plumptre, whose control of the midfield, launched attack after attack.
A fun game to watch - competitive and spirited, with no little skill - at times!
