Belated Updates - Tennis, Hockey, Badminton
Date: Friday 30 November 2007
Thursday afternoon marked a red-letter day for the St Edmund's sporting calendar. In the depths of a grey and dismal November day, a Tennis IV travelled to Bethany School for the first match in a local winter league, a team of 8 Badminton tyros took on an octet from St Lawrence College in Ramsgate, and the girls' 2nd XI Hockey team went to Sutton Valence, and came back with a 1 - 1 draw.
The Tennis team, Harry Callaway, Leon Lai, Katie McNie and Charlotte Pack won their four mixed doubles' sets, dropping just 2 games in the process, and came back ready for Battle Abbey School in the new year.
The Hockey team went 0 - 1 down to Sutton Valence, but fought back to equalise with a goal from Sophie Bacon, after good approach work from Natasha Hopper and Jo Macdonald, reborn as the centre-forward in the 'reserves'.
Badminton matches used to feature regularly on the programme in the days of David Kefford's control of Senior School sport, but, thanks to the initiative of James Somerville-Meikle, a first match for a decade was staged against St Lawrence College. Their experience, and regular training sessions paid off, and led them to a 5 - 3 victory. Revenge will be ours in the new year - given a little more court time between now and then!
