House Matches and Hockey

Date: Thursday 6 December 2007

Football House matches - senior boys' semi-finals - took centre stage on the Jackman Field this afternoon, as the four Houses competed for places in next week's final.

On the appropriately nicknamed 'ditch pitch', Baker beat Warneford 1 - 0, with a brilliant goal from Jack Barwick separating the sides. Warneford claimed a late equaliser from a Matt Dixon volley which struck the underside of the bar and was regathered by the 'keeper. Sadly for Warneford, there were no Russian linesmen - Wembley, 1966 - to confirm that it had crossed the line - and so Baker survived and went through.

On the 'near far', Wagner managed a more comfortable 2 - 0 win over Watson. An early penalty, stroked home by Nick Al Shaikh, eased Wagner nerves; a second goal, nodded in at the far post by David van Rooyen, ensured their victory.

In the meantime, St Lawrence College sent one Hockey XI to the UKC Astroturf, after they found themselves shorn of 9 regular 1st XI players. The visitors went home with the spoils, winning 2 - 1, after the SES girls had been 1 - 0 up at the interval. Some debate centred on the identity of the St Ed's scorer, but umpire David Whitehouse confirmed that Natasha Hopper had the final touch to a shot from Charlotte Pack.

To Saturday, and the final inter-School matches of the term against Brentwood School - two football fixtures for the 1st and 2nd XIs.
