Last Week's 'Stop Press'!
Date: Monday 17 December 2007
Friday December 14th : Sixth Form Theatre Studies pupils and some members of the Upper Fifth had the chance to visit the West End to see the stage version of 'The Lord of the Rings' at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. They had a backstage tour, and learned something of the workings of a famous West End theatre, along with some of its turbulent history. Many thanks to Liz Sears for organising this 'post-play treat'.
Friday December 14th: Baker House Sixth Formers, in response to the charity challenge of the term, braved the icy waters of Whitstable Harbour, in a sponsored event at lunchtime. Foregoing the pleasures of Fish'n'Chips, they went with Housemistress Jessica Ockenden, and lifeguard Dina Ayoub for a plunge in the North Sea. Matt Attwood, Charles Allen, Charlie Anderson, and Andrew Petts all survived their submersion, warmed up on tomato soup, and together will have raised nearly £250.
Saturday December 15th: Most of the Lower Fifth year group enjoyed the opportunity to practise their French conversational skills, and sample French cultural life on a day visit to Lille and its famous Christmas market. The outing was organised by Mlle Stephanie Thelliez, with staff support from Mme Micheloud, and Messrs Barnett and Dagley. This was first of its kind - many thanks Stephanie!
Monday December 17th: Two presentations in the Headmaster's Line: in the National Mathematics Competition, which attracted 57,000 entries nationwide, a gold award was made to St Edmund's Lower Sixth former, Xin Yi Du; a new award, the Millard-Gadenne Trophy to the 'angler of the year' - on the basis of a Friday afternoon activity - was presented to Upper Fifth former Oliver Chilton for his 'consistently good catches throughout the season'. His best was a 5lb Common Carp, caught with a bait of luncheon meat!
Monday December 17th: A lunchtime opportunity to sample the Upper Fifth GCSE Drama pieces for next summer, with four seven-minute snippets from 'Dreamjobs', 'Mere Mortals', 'Babels in Arms', and 'Our Boys'. The actors and actresses took their pieces to an audience for the first time; the audience found out just a little more about the cast!
