Literary Society
Date: Wednesday 30 January 2008
The first Literary Society meeting of the term was a pupil presentation in which two members of the Upper Sixth, having selected poems of their own choice, explained to their peers why they had made the choice!
Sam Vile proved both 'engaging aand eloquent' while discussing 'Tea on a Spaceship' by James Kirkup. Sadly, the second presentation was forestalled by the hospitalisation of Louise Thompson - a Netball injury - which prevented her participation. Head of Department Jon Dagley stepped into the breach and offered his take on a Michael Drayton sonnet.
Given other pressures, the audience was surprisingly large, and not surprisingly, attentive. It was good to see Greg Moulsdale, and Matt Dixon, supporting their colleagues!
The next meeting of this Lent Term will be a 'Charades' evening, with pupils donning the attire of a character from literature. More seriously, perhaps, next term will welcome a visit from Dr Catherine Alexander from the UKC to talk about Marlowe's 'Doctor Faustus'.
