Chorister Instrumental Concert
Date: Monday 11 February 2008
All Cathedral visitors are used to seeing, and hearing the Choristers at regular weekday and weekend services, but yesterday afternoon, after Evensong, a select audience, who ventured down to the Eastern Crypt of the Cathedral, was able to hear them as instrumentalists, rather than as vocalists.
This was the first venture of its type for several years, and, hopefully, the first of many under the Lambert regime, as many of the most senior members of Choir House, plus visiting tutor Tom Hooley, entertained a gathering of parents and friends.
There is no doubt that their talents lie in far more than simply angelic voices. Those who performed - on piano, saxophone, viola, cello, and clarinet - all displayed poise and confidence, and produced a lovely sound to the echoes of the Crypt. From Sebastian Nickols who opened the show with a Chopin Mazurka, to the finale of Joshua Best-Shaw evoking 'Summer' on his clarinet, massive talent was on display. Hopefully much of it will be at the disposal of the Senior School in the near or slightly more distant future!
There promises to be another such post-Evensong event later in the term. I hope I can be there.
