St Valentine's Day Recital
Date: Thursday 14 February 2008
While normal school routine went on around them, six hugely talented young musicians fully entertained a small lunchtime audience in the Ivy Coleman Recital Hall in a 35-minute concert, very different from what will be on stage tomorrow afternoon - Inter-House Singing!
Three flautists, one violinist, one pianist and one contralto offered an extremely varied programme, beginning with Ulrike Brinkmann playing the Adagio from Mozart's Flute Concerto in G. Seth Scott Deuchar then took the floor to play his scholarship piece, the 1st Movement from Prokofiev's Sonata No. 2 for Flute and Piano. Joanna Macdonald gave us Sondheim's 'Send in the Clowns'. after which John Bungay (a Bach sonata for Violin) and Junior School prodigy Yunha Hwang (Poulenc's Flute Sonata) paved the way for Jacky Fong's assault on Liszt's Transcendental Etude No. 4 - 'Mazeppa'. Cossack horsemen were certainly galloping across the Steppes of the Ukraine!
Many thanks to the accompanists, the indefatigable and irrepressible Spencer Payne and Jacob Barnes. After half-term - A-level recital No. 3: Oliver Jones and Daniel Caplen.
