A taste of the Battle of Britain for Form 5

Date: Thursday 28 February 2008

Pupils in Form 5 extended their Second World War studies recently by visiting the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum at Manston, a key RAF airfield in the Battle of Britain. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed examining and recording in pictures and words some of the many interesting artefacts and exhibits, not least the real Spitfire and Hurricane fighter aircraft. They were able to exercise their curiosity on ex-RAF navigator John Cairns, who was kind enough to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with the children.

After a picnic lunch the children were fascinated by (the senior) Mr and Mrs Austen’s accounts of what it was like growing up in Maidstone during the Second World War. We should like to thank the Austens for coming to talk to us and for giving us such an interesting afternoon.
