Monday and Tuesday - A Frantic 48 Hours!

Date: Wednesday 5 March 2008

GCSE Drama 'Practicals' took place on the evenings of Monday and Tuesday. Four separate productions were staged, the boys' three on Monday, and the girls on Tuesday, in front of enthusiastic audiences in the Recital Room and the Hall itself. All the groups were well prepared, though the subject material varied in quality and taste. Most demanding were clearly the David Ives' playlets, 'Mere Mortals' and 'Babels in Arms'.

The Inter-House junior Netball tournament on Tuesday produced another Warneford triumph, with their three wins condemning Watson to second place, Wagner to third and Baker for once bringing up the rear. The decisive match was the 7 - 6 Warneford win over Watson.

Hockey also took centre stage on Tuesday with the Pilgrims going down to a heavy defeat at the sticks of King's Canterbury. 0 - 8 is believed to be the final score.

On the intra-mural front, the Junior Boys' Inter-House semi-finals led to wins for Baker, 2 - 1 over Wagner, and for Warneford who beat Watson on penalty strokes after the game had been tied 1 - 1 at full time.

And, finally, on the academic front, two Sixth Form expeditions took place on Tuesday, with the Lower Sixth Geographers making their annual visit to the redeveloped London Docklands - Mr Mighell's last such operation! - and Upper Sixth Historians venturing to the Conway Hall in Holborn to enjoy - yes, seriously! - an excellent conference on the Stalinist era in the Soviet Union. Ask any of them about Dr Chris Ward from Cambridge, and his superb presentation on the 'Struggle over Power' after Lenin's death.
