Bishop Stephen Visits Senior School
Date: Tuesday 11 March 2008
The morning Chapel Service of Tuesday March 11th was very different from the usual Tuesday offering in that we were honoured by a visit from Bishop Stephen Venner, the Bishop of Dover in Canterbury, who presided over and preached at a service of Holy Communion for the Senior School.
The Bishop had been thwarted earlier in the term by the cancellation of the Confirmation Service, but was clearly pleased to be back at St Edmund's, and enjoy the atmosphere of a chapel in which there was due 'holiness' and involvement in the service.
The congregation listened attentively to a sermon based on the Old Testament story of Ezekiel's 'dry bones', and St John's Gospel version of the raising of Lazarus, and suggesting, powerfully, that 'love' is the vital element in all human relationships.
Two popular congregational hymns - 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' and 'Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer' - encouraged all to join in, and support the choir and staff in their efforts.
This was an uplifting start to the day, and we are all most grateful to Bishop Stephen for making time to lead and share in our act of worship. Come again, soon!
