Theatre Visits - GCSE and A-Level

Date: Friday 14 March 2008

Those who have the pleasure of studying Drama in the Fifth Forms, and Theatre Studies to A-Level are offered some amazing opportunities to enjoy 'theatre' both as a cultural experience, and as part of an extension programme to their classroom studies.

In the last eight days, Miss Liz Sears, the newly appointed Head of Drama, has taken her pupils on three separate theatre visits, taking advantage of the Gulbenkian Theatre and the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury.

The first outing took the A-level candidates to the Gulbenkian to watch the UKC's own amateur dramatic society, T24, perform the 'physical theatre' of 'Peep Show' - relationships in a tough modern world. This was greeted with some constructive criticism!

The second excursion included the U5 Drama candidates to see the 'Horse and Bamboo' Company perform 'Veil' - masque theatre about two Iraqi twin girls, separated at birth, and finding themselves again. This was deemed 'brilliant' by Miss Sears, but greeted with a mixed response by our audience members.

The final outing was to the Marlowe to watch 'Treasure Island' - clearly a marked contrast from 'Veil'. Swashbuckling family fun brought some respite from the politics of the Middle East, and a chance to enjoy an adaptation of the Stevenson story.

This was the last theatre visit of a very busy term for our thespians; now they have to prepare for the public performances of their exam pieces at the start of next term. Good luck to them all.
