House Cricket Finals and Kent College Tennis

Date: Thursday 1 May 2008

If anyone had any doubts about the value of House sport as either 'proper' competition or as a bonding exercise those doubts would have been dispelled by both of the matches played this afternoon on the Alps and on the Ist XI pitch.

The 3rd and 4th place play-off between Warneford and Watson ended with a Watson victory by 6 wickets. Callaway's 31, and Plumptre's 17 got Warneford up to 87 - 7 in 16 overs. Moulsdale took 2 - 11 in two overs as the most successful Watson bowler. Perry (31) and Higson (28) took Watson to the verge of victory, which was duly completed despite Callaway's 2 - 24 with the ball.

The final was a fantastic match, combining some decent cricket with occasional farce! Wagner, inserted by Baker, reached 103 - 7 in 16 overs, thanks largely to Marc van Rooyen's 40. Charles Allen, as usual in House cricket took wickets - 4 - 30. The Baker reply centred around Ben Easter who scored a controlled 54 before being superbly caught by Max Kirkness at cover. Draper fought hard to give him support, but the introduction of reserve wicket keeper Peter Edlin changed the face of the game. His first three balls produced a hat trick of dropped catches, but he then found people who could catch and took five wickets in seven balls to finish with 5 - 14. Freddy Pack could have still won the game with a boundary from the last ball, but he could only manage a single, and Wagner won by three runs. The Baker winning streak was broken!

Senior girls - Tennis - took on Kent College after School - at home - and, won convincingly by 6 rubbers to love. Each of the three pairs on either side played two sets, and Charlotte Pack and Katie McNie (1), Charlotte Johnson and Lisa Kopietz (2), and Natasha Hopper and Lucinda Summerfield (3), swept all before them. 36 - 16 was the final tally in terms of games played and won, so a thoroughly encouraging performance against our closest rivals.
