St Lawrence - Thursday May 8th

Date: Friday 9 May 2008

Another glorious summer's day, and the chance for cricketers to discard their sweaters, and for tennis players to get out of track suit trousers, as the 1st and 2nd XIs of St Edmund's and St Lawrence locked horns in the latest of a most longstanding series of clashes, and two girls' tennis VIs did the same.

The girls matches went clearly in favour of St Lawrence, as their 1sts won 7 - 2, and the 2nds match also went to St Lawrence by 6 rubbers to 3. No SES pairing stood out on the day. Each won one set with the exception of Misses Hopper and Summerfield who sadly missed out on this occasion.

The 2nd XI cricket match was swiftly won by St Edmund's. St Lawrence were 41 all out in no time at all with Philip Lye being the most successful bowler with 3 - 3 in his two overs. SES were struggling in reply, before Matt Dixon (22*) and Remy Bertlin steadied the ship and brought us home to a 6 wicket win.

The Firsts won even more convincingly, to complete a clean sweep of four wins in the week over SLC. St Lawrence chose to bat, and were limited to 127 - 9 after 35 overs. Draper with 3 - 15, and Pape with 2 - 11 were the pick of the School's bowlers. After Rawlins fell in the second over, there were no alarums for either Pape or van Rooyen as they both eased to half-centuries in a nine-wicket win. A good result in terms of bowling practice, and burgeoning confidence - but not the best preparation for the tough Alleyn's fixture - away - on Saturday.
