Saturday's Synopsis
Date: Sunday 11 May 2008
Tough fixtures for both the boys and the girls this Saturday with Cricket against Alleyn's School, and Tennis against King's, Canterbury.
After the clean sweep against St Lawrence, Alleyn's were going to be a much tougher proposition and so it proved as they won three out of three at our expense. The 1sts and Under 14s both made the long minibus journey to London, and came back late and empty handed.
The Under 14s bowled and fielded tidily to restrict Alleyn's to 151 - 7 with Thomas (3 - 27) and Barrett (2 - 26) being the pick of the bowlers. But fragile batting, and the first ball dismissal of JS guest Max Bungay, reduced us to 35 all out.
The Firsts spent 40 overs watching Alleyn's amass 225 - 4, with skipper Easter taking 3 - 50. In reply, SES struggled to 151 - 8, with last minute replacement Matt Dixon hitting 58, while more established players failed. Ben Draper's injury, leaving us a bowler and a fielder light, did not help.
The best game of all was at home where in a nail biting finish Alleyn's held their nerve to win by just 2 runs. They had scored 197 - 2 in 25 overs to take a grip on the game, but with Smith (52) and Stone (83) putting on 125 for the first wicket a home win looked possible. Stone's run out was, sadly, the key moment, as Penn and Attwood, try as they did, could not keep up with the run rate. Eight were needed off the last two balls - we got five of them, and fell tantalisingly short.
The junior girls, playing at home, shared the spoils with King's. With Jenny Wheal and Alicia Hager continuing where they finished last season, and winning all three of their sets, the Under 15s shaded the match 5 - 4, with newcomers Georgia Gurney and Sofia Williams taking 2 points out of three. The Under 14s lost 2 - 7, with Laura Globig partnering Julia Gawecka to score the SES 2.
The senior sides, down at King's, have yet to report, but when Miss Cliff's pigeon comes home....It flew in on Monday morning, but with no good news. King's were not great sides, but played with far more consistency than our girls and so swept to 8 - 1 and 9 - 0 victories.
Tennis House Match finals this afternoon will decide two more trophies en route to the 'Cock House' award. In this context, Inter-House Swimming takes place this coming Saturday, with the first race due to start at 10.45am.
