A Busy Tennis Week - Up to Half Term
Date: Friday 30 May 2008
In the week before half-term, despite the problems of study leave, five tennis matches were played, mostly at senior level, and with one Under 14 fixture.
The girls played and beat the Duke of York's, 6 - 3, on Wednesday afternoon, thanks largely to a clean sweep by the second pair of Charlotte Johnson and Lisa Kopietz. On Thursday they repeated the success with a 5 - 4 win over Dover College, with the first pair of Charlotte Pack and Katie McNie this time winning their three sets. Natasha Hopper and Lucinda Summerfield secured the victory with two set wins from Number 2.
The boys' 2nd VI beat the Duke of York's 7 - 2 on Wednesday while the First !V were locked in a titanic struggle against King's Canterbury in the Kent Cup. The final score was 5 - 1 to King's, but two of the matches went to 7 - 5, and a third to a tie-break and a 7 - 6 loss. Had those three gone our way, then... On Thursday both the 1st VI and the 2nd VI took on St Lawrence College, and won convincingly - drubbed them? - 9 - 0 and 8 - 1 respectively. 'A comprehensive team performance; well played all' was the official comment from coach Leigh Millard. The only set back of the week, apart from the cup defeat, was for the L5 side who went to Dover College and found it tough going against an Under 15 squad. The only set was won by Naseem and Sekiguchi.
