Warneford Triumph - Inter-House Athletics
Date: Friday 20 June 2008
After a grey and miserable start to the morning, the weather relented enough to allow the annual Inter-House Athletics' competition to take place on the Jackman Field today. The first track event at 10.30am was followed by a very entertainingly competitive two hours, culminating in the presentations to individual and team winners.
Dr Braddy, the Warneford Housemaster, was, sadly, unable to be present on an occasion when Warneford athletes dominated the day, and carried off most of the team trophies. Warneford were the overall winners, amassing 156 points, 32 ahead of their nearest rivals, Watson. Wagner were third with 112, just one ahead of Baker.
Warneford, in fact, won the Junior Girls, Junior Boys, and Open Girls events, and also shared the Senior Boys cup with Wagner. The Standards Cup was won by Watson, and on the day, Warneford again, with three wins, won the Relays Cup.
Individual awards were made to Nick Keliris (Jumps Cup), Robert Penn (Throws), Ruth Bland (Sprints), Matt Dixon (400 metres), Harry Callaway (800 metres), and Charlotte Garrett (1500 metres).
On the basis of the day's performances, the Victor Ludorum Trophy went to Marc van Rooyen, who won both the senior sprints, and anchored the Wagner victory in the final relay. The Victrix Ludorum was, rightly, Ruth Bland, who in winning the 200 metres, set a new School record of 27.78 seconds, beating the previous time set by Chloe Binding in 2003.
Many thanks indeed to all the competitors, the staff, the visiting supporting parents, and above all to Mrs Wilkinson and Mr Jones for masterminding the whole event.
