After the Lord Mayor's Show!

Date: Wednesday 2 July 2008

Last Saturday's trio of wins over King's Rochester was undoubtedly a highlight of the cricketing season. But, as everyone knows, sport is a great leveller, and heavy defeats can often, and do, follow, equally good victories.

Yesterday the Under 14s played a rearranged fixture at home to Cranbrook, and went down to just such a defeat. Batting first SES managed only 81 all out, with Dominic Barrett the only notable performer with the bat with 33. Cranbrook lost two wickets in knocking off the runs and won by eight wickets.

The 1sts played their first game in a series of four matches this week, and travelled to St Bede's School in Sussex missing a number of key players - including Marc van Rooyen - and were on the receiving end of a battering with the bat. In 40 overs St Bede's scored at over 8 an over to finish on 341 - 4! Both openers scored centuries in an opening partnership of 209, and the only wicket-takers were Pape, Callaway, Draper and David van Rooyen. Analyses need not be published, except for Pape and Higson who conceded only 64 in their joint fourteen overs - 4.5 an over; that leaves 277 runs off the other 26!

The run chase was never on, and though Pape reached 48, and Callaway 22, the School were bowled out in the 29th over for 143. Losing margin - 198 runs, to a side brimming with talent and experience.

We need to bounce back for Langton today, and the Cup semi-final against Leigh CTC, whoever they may be, and whenever and wherever it may be staged!!
