Football - 2008 Season

Date: Tuesday 9 September 2008

Back to School and straight into competitive football! The new 1st XI took the field for the first time yesterday evening in a training game against an XI from Burgess-Hodgson, the Canterbury Accountants, and sponsors - thank you! - of St Edmund's football.

Team manager Robert Robinson has opted for youth and strength of character for his opening matches. His squad of 14 players, - 3 x Upper Sixth, 4 x Lower Sixth, and 7 x Upper Fifth - were pitted against a physically strong and pacy adult side from our sponsors. The School found itself 2 - 0 up after ten minutes, were pegged back before and after half-time, and eventually went down 3 - 4.

Robinson was pleased that our goals - two from James Attwood, and one from skipper Jack Ransley - were well constructed and coolly finished, and argued that the school sides whom we play in future weeks will be no more physical nor have more pace up front than last night's opposition.

On Saturday the XI, plus the Under 14s and the Under 15s, travel to Croydon to play the Royal Russell School. Sadly, the 1sts will be without Nick Keliris (hamstring) and last night's 'man of the match' Joe Rawlins (family commitment), but spirits are high after a very promising start to the season.
