Senior Hockey - King's Rochester
Date: Thursday 18 September 2008
Fixtures for the 1st and 2nd XIs were calendared against King's School, Rochester this afternoon, and both took place, with 1sts entertaining King's at the UKC, and 2nds travelling to Strood.
The 1st XI game was very exciting and one of the best in recent times. The final score was a goalless draw - 0 - 0 - but both teams had chances to break the deadlock. Georgia Gurney nearly did just that in the final minute, but her goal-bound shot was deflected wide. As we lost easily to them last year, the signs are good for a more successful season.
The defence withstood a lot of pressure: Helen Sabine, Grace Johnson, Louise Garrett, and Arabella Pemberton held the fort well. Alicia Hager, growing in confidence, made several vital saves in goal. In the absence of skipper Emma Wink (University Open Day) Amber Nicholls stood in very well as captain. All in all, a most promising team effort.
The 2nds thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Medway towns, winning comprehensively 6 - 0, having been five up at the interval. Sam Catford led the way with a hat-trick - plus one disallowed from a short corner - with the others coming from Annalise Williams, Becky-Anne Gladwin, and Charlotte Garrett. All four of the forwards scored, thanks to some excellent crisp passing from the midfield where Jessica Dixon was in good form, alongside Charlotte Lench. Laura Patterson had one save to make in the 50 minutes. This team performance, and a well deserved result on the basis of a 100% commitment meant that there were eleven 'Men of the Match'!
