2nd XI Hockey - Ashford School
Date: Saturday 11 October 2008
A single fixture on Monday evening pitted our 2nd XI against the girls from Ashford School, who, to the surprise of many, included St Edmund's 'old girl' Roberta Stokes-Newens in their starting eleven.
Ashford applied most of the pressure in the first half, but a breakaway involving a good 'one-two' between Olivia Thrush and Charlotte Garrett produced a clinical Thrush finish, and a half-time lead.
Ashford equalised within a minute of the start of the second period, and added a second before SES woke up to the need to press for an equaliser themselves. Chances went begging - an open goal after a right-wing cross, the failure to latch on to a superb Gladwin through ball, and missing the target from a short-corner follow up in the last minute meant a final narrow 1 - 2 defeat.
Susannah Benham played solidly at the back, Annabel Chislett looked the most constructive of the midfield players, and wingers Becky-Anne Gladwin and Garrett threatened on occasions. Reluctance to penetrate the opposition circle, however, left scoring opportunities at a premium.
