A House Match Medley

Date: Tuesday 11 November 2008

Three sets of House Matches took place this Tuesday afternoon: Junior boys' football reached its climax; the Junior girls played a round-robin seven a-side hockey tournament; and, the first semi-final of the girls' squash competition took place with Baker playing Warneford.

In the football, the third/fourth place play-off was won convincingly by Wagner who, with a hat-trick from Oli Kirkness, and two from Joel Whitewood, were too strong for Watson whose consolation goal came from Laurence King. The final was exciting to say the least with Warneford taking a two - nil lead into the second half through a long-range effort from defender Robbie Stewart, and a second from Lewis Piper. Baker came back strongly after the break and goals from Sekiguchi and Alex Hunter forced a 'golden goals' extra time. Into the second period, and a long range right footer from Sekiguchi evaded Daniel Love, and Baker could celebrate a tremendous fight back, and their first win of the campaign.

The scores: Baker 3 Warneford 2; Wagner 5 Watson 1.

The hockey produced different winners in Wagner who topped the group after winning two and drawing one of their three matches. In fact, it was all very close. Baker were out of the reckoning, having failed to score in any match, but as Watson took on Wagner in the last of the afternoon's ties, a Watson win would have left the three 'Ws' all tied on four points. The game finished 1 - 1, and Wagner got the single point to lift them clear of Warneford, and claim the title. All very close, and very exciting!

As for the squash, Warneford gained some revenge on Baker with a 4 - 1 win. The girls played a 'best of three' format, and three of the five ties were very close indeed. Natasha Hopper won Baker's single point; the closest match was between Becky-Anne Gladwin and Amber Nicholls, who lost the third game 5 - 9. Other Warneford winners were Katie McNie, Annalise Williams, and Margot Chatenay.
