Inter-House Basketball - Senior Competition

Date: Wednesday 12 November 2008

Ever popular, ever competitive, ever enjoyable - that is the consensus view of the annual Inter-House basketball competition, which was played at senior level this afternoon. The juniors take to the court next Wednesday after lessons.

The favourites for today's event were Baker and Warneford, Houses which contain the more experienced of the School team squad. The tournament is always played 'round robin' with each team playing three matches, each of just eight minutes' duration..

The first game threw up an immediate surprise with Watson beating a complacent and sluggish Baker by 7 points to four. This was, sadly, Watson's only win. A single win was the lot of Warneford, who lost to Baker, and to the surprise team Wagner.

The last of the six matches pitted Wagner with four points against Baker with two. Baker needed to win, and win well to secure the trophy. As it transpired, Baker did just that and with a 16 - 6 win overtook Wagner in the 'points for' column.

Wagner adopted a simple game plan throughout, and it nearly paid off: shoot, win the rebounds, and shoot again until baskets result. Baker, on the other hand, also kept possession, but attacked more effectively with excellent drives and lay-ups.

Thanks to Mr Millard for his organisation, to Mr Urey and Mr Knight for officiating, and to all the players for their superb, and controlled, competitive spirit. Well done!
