Under 15 Hockey - St Lawrence College
Date: Tuesday 25 November 2008
Freezing conditions, but a game to bring a glow to the most grizzled of spectators and coaches alike, as St Edmund's Under 15 XI fought hard to turn an early deficit into a 3 - 2 win against St Lawrence College, one of our oldest rivals on the sporting circuit.
Every time I watch the Under 15s there seems to be a different set of players on the pitch - perhaps the problem of player availability has prevented rapid development of the squad? - and today we saw Tayley Brown as a defender, and Clarisse Luckhurst on the left wing. Fortunately, the nucleus of Gina Zahn, Deveena Pithia, Georgina Lench, and Georgia Henry was there to give the strength in midfield which ultimately won the game.
SLC took an early lead, but Caryn van Rooyen coolly equalised just before half-time. The first part of the second half saw SES well on top, and Misses Henry and Pithia took a couple of the many chances that were created to give the School a two-goal cushion. This proved vital as the game swung in SLC's favour with a second goal, and considerable pressure nearly denying St Ed's a home win. But a win it was, and well deserved after the whole team showed real fight, and a will to win. Team discipline, and working for one another, are often winning qualities!
