Girls' Hockey v Sutton Valence

Date: Wednesday 26 November 2008

As the hockey season draws to its end, and the fixture list is nearing completion, it is great to see girls' teams still enjoying their hockey, and getting some success.

Today both the 1st and 2nd XIs played Sutton Valence, and the 2nds won a thrilling 4 - 3 victory at the UKC. SES dominated the first half, and a hat-trick from Sam Catford gave us a two goal cushion. The last coaching advice at the interval was to work hard to preserve the lead - ten minutes later the scores were level at 3 - 3! Fortunately the balance shifted again the School's favour, and a snap shot from Miss Catford eluded the keeper to give us - and her - a fourth goal, and a winner. Some really constructive hockey was played, belying the game's '2nd XI' status.

The 1sts were up against it at Sutton, with midfield dynamo Arabella Pemberton unfit, and a change of formation required. Georgia Gurney scored a cracking goal from a short corner, but SV scored four. 1 - 4 was the final score at the end of a fairly bruising encounter.

On Saturday three teams play the Duke of York's School from Dover - the last block fixture of the term. Next Thursday there will be only one match against St Lawrence, an 'A' XI at home, given the demands of the first night of 'Daisy Pulls It Off'.
