Roper wins the Inter-House Chess Competition

Date: Saturday 29 November 2008

Open to boys and girls in Forms 6, 7 and 8, the Inter-House Chess Competition has been fought out during lunchtime breaks over the past two weeks. The four Houses all played each other in all three year groups. Two points were awarded for a victory by checkmate and one point if the game was incomplete at the end of break, depending on the state of play and how many pieces had been taken.

The atmosphere was often intense and a proportion of players showed a good knowledge of chess strategy. As the winter wears on, I am sure many will continue to play chess at lunchtime as they obviously enjoy the challenge the game provides.

Congratulations to the following, who won their matches by checkmate: Callum Bell, Cameron England, Sueng Min Lee, Jeremy Downes, Adam Moore, Philip Ross and Matthew Farmer.

As for the overall result, congratulations to the winner of the trophy, Roper House, closely followed by Chaucer, Becket and Marlowe Houses.
