Tuesday's Titbits - King's and King's!

Date: Friday 23 January 2009

Junior boys' hockey teams met King's Canterbury at the UKC and at Polo Farm; junior girls' netball teams travelled to Rochester to meet King's Rochester.

The Under 15 boys fought out a hard 1 - 1 draw, in which they struggled to match the skill levels of the opposition, but never stopped working for one another. After a good first half (0 -0), St Edmund's went one down after a short corner, and it looked likely to stay that way until the last two minutes when a short corner of their own produced an equaliser, as Oli Kirkness beat a defender to feed Dom Barrett, who coolly lifted it over a diving keeper. Work rate - excellent; controlled passing and possession - not so good, until the final stages.

The Under 14 girls faced a 'mission impossible' situation. Robbed of key players by injury and illness, and being forced to play replacements out of position was bad enough. Then to come up against a side including a first team - and county - goal shooter... The sides shared forty goals; the SES contribution was, sadly, miniscule, but all credit to the girls, and Anna-Louise Webb in particular, for coming off after every quarter with 'smiles on their faces'.

The Under 15s shared 27 goals, with SES finishing just one behind, losing 13 - 14. Kara Wagland was cited in the match report for her 'brilliant interceptions', as occasional lapses in concentration allowed King's to keep that one goal ahead.

The best result of the day was from the Under 14 boys who came back from Polo Farm with a 5 - 0 win under their belts! Match details are yet to be confirmed, but rumour has it that Max Bungay scored one, and the other four were all from Andrew Pittard - the School's top goalscorer for the season so far.
