Theme Week in Abingdon House

Date: Sunday 7 October 2007

Last week was 'Clothes Week', our theme week for this term, each class exploring a different aspect of clothing or fashion. In the Ladybirds (Nursery) the children got excited about the clothes of fairytale characters. During the week they could be found making princess hats and painting fairytale people.

The Wrens (Reception) studied clothes for animals - or creature skins. They had fun feeling the different textures of fish scales, sheep's wool and antler horns.

The Robins (Year 1) explored clothes from around the world, finding out about national dress in a different country each day as well as learning about the countries through food and flags. Mrs Smart kindly talked about clothes from Japan and provided outfits for all the children to dress up in.

The Owls (Year 2) were fascinated to learn about special clothes used for protection, the people who wear them and why they need protection. They then conducted a series of experiments to find what makes a suitable material for a raincoat. They were very surprised at how quickly a piece of red sweatshirt absorbed water and now realise why teachers insist on them wearing a coat when “it is only drizzling with rain!” At the end of the week they designed and made their own scarves and gloves.
