Netball, Hockey, and Squash: Thursday 12th February

Date: Thursday 12 February 2009

The first results of the day came from the netball courts where the 1st VII won a third consecutive victory and the 2nds returned to winning ways with two good wins over Dover College.

The 2nds, with Annalise Williams coming in as a late replacement as goal attack in lieu of the once again incapacitated captain Gayane Charchoglyan, won 30 - 21. An even first half led to SES running away with it, and scoring a goal a minute in the final quarter. The 1sts, with Ellie Blanning making her debut as goal attack in the absence of Arabella Pemberton, went 8 - 0 up, and coasted to a 22- 5 victory. Jenny Wheal was outstanding in a good team performance, with much of the play revolving round the midfield linchpin, captain Natasha Hopper.

A squash 'A' team played the boys from Wellesley House School - a fixture which has been part of the list since time immemorial! Wellesley brought a much stronger side than the one which had challenged us last term, and this time's 4 - 1 victory - as opposed to 5 - 0 - reflected that fact. Our winners were Daniyal Jafree (3 - 1), Tom Farrer-Newey (3 - 0), Oli Kirkness (3 - 0), and Daniel Gladwin (3 - 1). Sadly, in her swansong performance Ioanna Peeva, suffered a rare defeat, and lost a gripping five-setter.

The boys' 1st XI travelled to Polo Farm to play Sir Roger Manwood's in a fixture brought forward from later in the month. The half-time score was 1 - 2 with Manwood's going two up before Harry Callaway pulled one back, latching onto an excellent through ball from skipper Ben Easter. Manwood's went further ahead from the penalty spot; this stirred St Ed's into belated action, but the only reply was a second goal for Julius Nausch. 2 -3 in Manwood's favour - edging a very even game,

The Pilgims entertained Dover College at the UKC Astro, and lost 0 - 5 to the DC 1st XI - not the best way to end the first half of their season.Last week, apparently, DC had beaten, 2 - 1, the Manwood's side to whom our 1sts lost today. Something of a mismatch for the Pilgrims, who were beaten by a couple of good players, and athleticism.
