Senior Hockey Finals - Lent 2009

Date: Wednesday 25 March 2009

The 2009 hockey season finally ended today with the last two games involving the four Houses. Baker played Watson to avoid the 'wooden spoon', and Wagner vied with Warneford for the cup.

Both matches proved to be one-sided affairs, at least in terms of the scorelines. Baker, with just ten men, thumped Watson by 7 goals to one, and played some excellent passing hockey, allowing the goals to be shared between Disneur (2), Clapham (2), Alder, Pape and Dunning. Kemp scored a cracking consolation for Watson just before half-time.

Wagner were always likely to struggle against Warneford, and did their cause no good by conceding soft goals at the very start of each half. Callaway scored twice, and Ben Clarke and Connor completed the scoring as Warneford won 4 - 1. Thomas Wolters netted a fine goal for Wagner just before the end, to give some reward for concerted pressure in which Peter Edlin was outstanding. As for Robbie Vile at the heart of the Wagner defence? I would love to see him pick up his stick again next season, and anchor the 1st XI back four.
