Cup, Cup, and Friendly!

Date: Wednesday 29 April 2009

Wednesday is not a games' afternoon, unless it is a games' afternoon! So it was yesterday as the girls' tennis team, the Under 15 cricket team, and the boys' 1st tennis VI played Highworth School, Ashford School, and Kent College respectively in cup, cup, and friendly matches.

The girls played and sadly lost two singles and two doubles matches against Highworth, and so depart from the ranks of the Aberdare Cup. The best performance came from the Williams' sisters, who lost their doubles by 2 sets to one, 4 - 6, 6 - 5, 1 - 6.

The senior boys hosted a VI from Kent College, and even without the rested Harry Callaway, won a convincing 6 - 3 victory. The KC 1st pair won their three sets, but that was all they won, as Ransley and Burns, Hollis and Withrington, and Alder and Disneur all beat KC pairs 2 and 3. A good win, bouncing back from the King's 'experience'.

Another first for the term was a win for the Under 15 cricket team. Drawn against the relative cricketing novices of Ashford School, SES reinforced the side with the inclusion of three stronger Under 14s, and cruised through to the next round of the Kent Cup, to meet, probably, Kent College. SES amassed 182 for 2 in 20 overs, with Max Bungay reaching 93*, well supported by Barrett with 36. In reply, Ashford managed just 63 all out. Naseem picked up 2 - 11, Alex Thomas 3 - 18, but the highlights of the innings were another hat trick of Bungay catches, and the work of Anglin who, in just 11 balls, took 5 - 4!! He bowled his off-spin, on a good length, and reaped a prodigious reward. Do it again!

Today - a 1st XI fixture against King's Rochester at home; the 2nds travel to the Paddock! The girls' 1st VI take on Sir Roger Manwood's - again at home.
