St Edmund's March On!
Date: Friday 15 May 2009
An Under 15 cricket team from Cornwallis Academy (Maidstone) visited St Edmund's this afternoon to play a second round tie in the Kent Under 15 cup, for the right to progress one stage nearer to the final. Cornwallis had drubbed Kent College in the previous round, and so we faced the prospect of today's game with some trepidation.
As it turned out, there was nothing to fear (except fear itself, as someone may once have said), as the opposition batted first and managed only 75 - 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite the dangerously short legside boundary, they managed only four 'fours' in the innings as tight bowling restricted all their potential runscorers. Max Anglin returned to form with the ball taking 3 - 9, and Under 14 promotee Daniyal Jafree took 2 - 9. Extras top scored with 25!
Our reply was short and sweet, reaching 76 for 1 in the ninth over. Barrett and Anglin laid a decent foundation before the skipper missed a straight one. Enter the in-form Bungay (20*) to join Anglin (40*), and within no time at all the job was done. Both of them played some sumptuous shots, none better than Bungay's back foot drive for four through mid off. Perfect timing, and the ball seared the turf as it raced to the fence.
Tomorrow, Cranbrook, and a nice drive to the Weald, 1sts and Under 15s away - once Sports' Day is done!
