Sporting Snippets - The Cup Run Goes On!
Date: Saturday 23 May 2009
Senior matches - girls' tennis and boys' cricket - interrupted study leave, and a House match tennis play-off was completed during the week leading up to half-term.
The girls' 1st VI played twice, with varying personnel, on Wednesday and Thursday, but won both the fixtures against the Duke of York's RMS - by 6 rubbers to 3, and then against Dover College, 5 rubbers to 4. Every player enjoyed at least one win over the two days, and the most successful pairings included Natasha Hopper and Annalise Williams.
The 3rd/4th play-off in the boys' Inter-House tennis competition went in Watson's favour, leaving the overall winners as Wagner (girls) and Warneford (boys). Cups will be presented in the next Headmaster's Line.
The boys' 1st XI cricketers, last year's beaten finalists in the Lemon Cup - Kent Under-19 trophy - progressed to the next round this year with a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Sir Roger Manwood's School from Sandwich. Manwood's were bowled out for just 49 - Kemp took four (he was magnificent - ARJ), and SES knocked them off for the loss of Hollis and Pape; Stone (20*) and Callaway steadied the ship - please excuse the nautical metaphor; I'm still swaying from the Solent! - and saw us into the next stage of what is seen by many as a chance to get a bit of revenge on Norton Knatchbull, should we meet them! The next stage is, in fact, the quarter-final, where we may meet either Dane Court or Chatham House.
