Another Cup Win - Under 15s March On!

Date: Monday 25 May 2009

While junior tennis teams were taking on Dover College, the Under 15 cricket team were faced with their next cup opponents, the boys from Chatham House Grammar School. All these fixtures were at home, and made for a very interesting afternoon's sport.

The Under 15 girls won a convincing 7 - 2 victory over their Dover College counterparts, with the first pair of Emily Betham and Deveena Pithia winning a clean sweep of three sets. The boys went down to a 4 - 5 defeat, despite the best efforts of Oli Kirkness and Daniel Gladwin, who had a great win over a Russian second pair!

The cricket format, 20/20, with four overs per bowler, produced a high scoring game on the 1st XI pitch, where everything favoured the batsmen - a flat track, a fast outfield, and some variable bowling. Chatham House started slowly, but then accelerated before losing their first wicket on 111 in the 16th over. They finished on 146 - 3, with Dom Barrett bowling effectively 'at the death', taking 2 - 27 in his four overs.

The run chase went perfectly to plan, with Max Anglin and Barrett getting us ahead of the clock, and in a position to avoid risks in the latter stages. They put on 121 for the first wicket before Anglin (68) missed a heave against a slow left-armer and was bowled. Max Bungay joined Barrett, and together they reached the target from the first ball of the 18th over, Barrett finishing on 59* and Bungay on 17*. Boundaries aplenty meant that we were never under any real pressure; had Barrett been caught relatively early on, then it might have been a different story. But he rode that piece of luck....and we're into the next round!
