Junior Cricket - Inter-House Finals Day
Date: Tuesday 30 June 2009
The last Inter-House competitions of the year were completed this afternoon as two very close cricket matches produced a championship side in the favourites Warneford, runners-up in the shape of Baker, third place Wagnerites, and wooden spoonists Watson. Each game went to the last ball of the 16-over format, and provided real entertainment for the supporters of all four teams.
On the Alps, Wagner ran up 150 for 7, with Anglin, returned from his sojourn in the States, knocking up 79. Extras (37) and Whitewood on 15* made the other contributions of note. Bebb and Barnard each took two wickets, for 6 and 34 respectively. Barnard then smashed 62, favouring the pull into the tennis courts, but Ben Al Shaikh, with 5 - 24 in three overs, turned the tide. Barkat (30*) and Bebb (13*) fought to the end, but could not steal it in the final over. A win by just 5 runs to Wagner.
On the 1st XI pitch, now very dry, and with a lightning fast outfield, Warneford batted first and were contained to 125 for 4. Bungay got them off to a flyer, but when he was bowled by Thomas, it took a positive knock from Naseem (51*), with support from Hitchcock to post a defendable score. Baker kept up with the asking rate, but the dismissal of Barrett (33) left just too much for the middle-order to do. Gladwin bowled a two-wicket over to increase the pressure, and, needing 20 off the last over, Pittard and Wylie managed, bravely, 16 of them to leave Warneford champions by just three runs.Man of the match? Edam Naseem - a vital innings, a key wicket, and the catch to remove Barrett!
Who, now, will be the winners of the 'Cock House' Cup? All will be revealed at Friday's final Headmaster's Line of the year!
