Form 4 visit the Iron Age and Roman Britain at Butser Ancient Farm
Date: Tuesday 29 September 2009
Many thanks to Rosalind in Form 4 for writing this account of the Form 4 field trip to Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire in support of this term’s History Topic.
I work up at twenty to six. I was in a rush and I had to eat my breakfast in the car. Mummy and I had to pick up Milly and Sophie on the way to school. When we got to school we went to our classroom and then we all went down to the coach. It took 2 ½ hours to get there and we watched DVDs on the coach. When we arrived we hopped of the coach and met our guide Angela.
Angela showed us an Iron Age roundhouse and we went inside. It was very smokey in the roundhouse and we sat around the fire on animal skins. After that Angela said we were going to be spinning wool and we would be able to take it home. Then we went into a Roman villa and we made mosaics, but we didn’t get to finish them. Then we saw how a hypocaust worked. After that we saw the plan of the Roman villa and we saw frescos. When we had lunch it was drizzling which made it misty and cold.
After lunch we went to the gift shop and I bought a quill, a bracelet and a sheep keyring. Next we made some Celtic jewellery out of wire and I made a torc for Sheepy. Then we had a go at wattling. We made a fence and we sat on it to see how strong it was. After that we went to explore the great roundhouse, which had Iron Age furnishings, tools and weapons.
We got back on the bus and drove home. I think it was a great day.
