Inter-House Mathematics Competition - Chaucer triumphant!

Date: Wednesday 30 September 2009

The Inter-House Mathematics Competition took place last Tuesday in the Recital Hall. The event was staged in two rounds, Lower School followed by Upper School, with House teams comprising one mathematician from each year group in Years 3-5 and years 6-8 respectively.

To begin with, each participant had to answer as many questions as possible in a 10 minute time frame. The questions were age specific and this challenge was completed in a frantically busy silence!

Then each House had to work as a team to answer more tricky problems. Discussion was positively encouraged and answers were raced to the front of the hall to be scrutinised by Mr Austen and Mr Reames. If the solution was correct then the next question was given, if it was wrong then the team could have another go.

When you look at the overall results the competition was quite close except for one part of the competition. Chaucer's Lower School team romped away with the problem-solving challenge and this ultimately proved decisive. Therefore congratulations go to all the competitors, especially Chaucer and even more so to William Inscoe, Jonathan Honnor and Joseph Young on their terrific problem solving prowess.
