Biologists on the move

Date: Friday 9 October 2009

On Thursday 1st October two groups of Lower Sixth Biologists (21 in total) visited the Kent University to see their Transmission Electron Microscope. The pupils were lucky enough to have Ian Brown show them how slides are prepared for viewing. They were also able to view specimens of cells where they were able to identify various components of the cell (ultrastructure) including organelles such as mitochondria. The images that they were able to see were magnified between 20,000 and 30,000 times. Pretty small!!!

Their next visit will be to London on 25th November where they will be attending a Sixth Form Biology Conference with 8 eminent speakers including Professor Winston and Professor Steven Jones.
