Sundry Snippets - Wednesday
Date: Tuesday 10 November 2009
The Science Society met yesterday evening to attend a lecture at the UKC, entitled 'Mobile Phones and Health'. Miss Hummerstone forewent the pleasure of the Baker House Curry Evening to escort two Roes and a Vickers to the presentation, which proved both accessible and interesting. Essentially, all the current evidence is inconclusive, but the suggestion is that there is more danger of radiation from the hand set than from the base stations. Ten years of regular use might induce tumours, but enough of the audience seemed fit and well despite regular mobile use, and this persuaded our youngsters that there was no immediate need to abandon this form of communication!
Another 'snippet' focuses on one of our Lower Fifth girls, Bethany Whitington who missed School recently to travel to Blackpool, where she had the chance to mingle with the stars of 'Strictly Come Dancing' and achieve considerable success in her own right. Her mother writes: '...Beth finished in the top twenty in the country, with her partner in Rock and Roll, and FIRST for her team dance. She had a great weekend...picking up tips..to help her at competition level in both ballroom and latin....' What an experience!
And a third!, with news from the world of equestrianism, three-day eventing, and Oliver Lawrence. Over the first weekend of half-term, in the final event of the season, Oliver took part in the Junior Open Novice Class at Little Downham, Cambridge and came second overall. Not only that, but he became the Southern Region BYRDS (British Young Riders Dressage Scheme) champion, at Novice, 16 and Under, Elementary level. Some half-term!
