A Great Day for the Hockey Teams!

Date: Wednesday 18 November 2009

Two matches against Sir Roger Manwood's School from Sandwich and two high-scoring wins for the 1st and 2nd XIs made the afternoon one to remember. The 1sts had the pleasure of playing at Polo Farm, the home of Canterbury HC, and found it very much to their liking as they turned a 2 - 1 half-time lead into a final score of 5 - 2. Deveena Pithia registered her first hat-trick for the School at this - or any? - level, and was well supported with goals from Amber Nicholls and Katie McNie. What a difference it makes to have an almost full squad available! Coach John Maylam was thrilled by the performance of a side which is fulfilling its potential, and by the return of Arabella Pemberton in midfield.

The 2nds had to dig a couple of Middle Fifths out of lessons to ensure a starting eleven, and Tayley Brown and Rowan Jones both had to work hard as the final defenders, faced by a strong Manwood's forward line. Charlotte Lench poached the opening goal at the far post, before Manwood's equalised from a swift breakaway which left our defence outnumbered. Georgia Henry restored the lead before the interval, and added her second immediately on the restart. Charlotte Lench added the fourth, and her second, with a clean strike from a short corner. My man of the match was skipper Jess Dixon, who worked tirelessly as the midfield link, tackling, running, and distributing - non-stop!

Next week has House Matches on the Calendar: juniors on Tuesday (a round-robin tournament), and a 2nd XI match against Sutton Valence at home on Thursday.
