Tuesday - Girls' House Sport Galore- Not to Mention the Boys!
Date: Tuesday 24 November 2009
The final of the girls' Inter-House squash competition was postponed sine die - massive extra-curricular pressures on many of the players - but the juniors managed to play the semi-finals of the boys' football event, and the girls managed to complete the 'round-robin' hockey tournament.
In the football, two exciting matches produced victories for Baker, who overcame a half-time 1 - 2 deficit to beat Wagner 6 - 2, and for Watson who beat Warneford on penalties (3 - 2) after the sides were locked at 2 - 2 at full time and after a fruitless 'golden goals' period. Steven Draper bagged a hat-trick for Baker; Pittard (2), and Inscoe completed the scoring. In reply, the Wagner goals came from Whitewood and Hewitt. The wind was a key factor in the win, as it was in the other game where two goals apiece from Bungay for Warneford, and Tickridge for Watson produced the full time stalemate, resolved only on penalties.
The hockey tournament was fought out between three of the four Houses, with Baker on this occasion very much the also-rans. The Wagner victory was sealed by a 5 - 2 win over Watson in the final match. Wagner had to win to secure the title; Watson only had to draw. Wagner won convincingly. Q.E.D! Warneford did well to win one and draw one of their three matches, but Baker spent the afternoon conceding goals (16) and scoring just the one against Wagner. The tournament was much enjoyed by one of our inspectors, who was whisked from the Jackman Field to the Astro, to witness the denouement of an absolutely typical, keen, but sportingly fought House competition.
Tomorrow - senior basketball, in the Sports' Hall, at 4.30pm. Primarily for the boys, but some girls will be wearing House vests, I'm sure!
