Senior Inter-House Basketball - Wednesday 25th November

Date: Wednesday 25 November 2009

This annual competition - boys' senior Inter-House basketball - was slotted belatedly into the calendar for November for two cogent reasons: to fill a gap in the programme for the School's basketball squad, and to give the inspectorate a look at Inter-House rivalry at its best.

The 'round-robin' tournament took place with four Houses, three officials, and a veritable multitude of spectators and supporters on the sidelines. This was Mr Knight's 38th consecutive championship, dating back to the old days of bloodletting in the Old Gym through to the pleasure of officiating in the Sports' Hall, now over twenty years in operation.

The afternoon was dominated by Baker, who won their three matches, thanks largely to the scoring prowess of Arnie Dunning, who put the ball in the basket when it was needed to take, or regain, control of the game. Baker had to beat Watson - level on points with two wins apiece - in the final game of the afternoon, and that they did, narrowly, by 4 points to 1.

Thus Watson came second, largely through determined defence, and the rare but effective basket. Scores of Watson 4 Wagner 2, and Watson 2 Warneford 1 tell their own story! Warneford came third, handicapped throughout by the long-term injury to Zhaoqi Tong, and Wagner slipped into fourth place, despite the heroic efforts of Carl Fryer - at his best against Baker - the non-stop Charlie Burns.

Thanks to everyone who made the tournament the success it usually is; a junior event is planned on a Tuesday later in December.
