Peter Cameron
Date: Sunday 29 November 2009
I am sorry to have to report the death of a former Director of Music at St Edmund's School. Peter Cameron was appointed by Francis Rawes to that position in September 1975, as successor to Victor Standing, and left the School at the end of the Lent Term in 1984, to be succeeded by Dennis Kiddy.
Peter Cameron was educated at Dean Close, before moving to the Royal College of Music where he gained his A.R.C.M. and F.R.C.O. He then went to Keble College, Oxford, as an organ scholar, and took his B.A. in music. His first teaching position was at Harrow School, under Brian Hoban, ex-Headmaster of St Edmund's. Thence he came to Canterbury in 1975.
Peter directed the first concerts in the 'new' School Hall, and was closely associated in his time here with Martin Hall, as his assistant, before both moved on in 1984. Peter continued to work in musical education, both in schools, and with his private pupils until his recent illness.
Peter died on the morning of November 26th, after a long battle with cancer. For those who remember him, as a colleague, as a teacher, and as a friend, details of his funeral arrangements will be published here, when known.
This will, in fact, take place on Thursday 10th December, at 2.00pm, at Barham Crematorium. Invited to the service are family, close friends, and colleagues; this will be followed by a service at 3.00pm at St Bartholomew's Church in Herne Bay.
